Jewelry In The Pulpit

Is jewelry in the pulpit considered "gaudy"? Is there a reason why Pastors will wear an additional ring on the RIGHT hand?

Is wearing jewelry in the pulpit a distraction to the members?

Do the praise leaders and Pastors wear excessive jewelry at your church?

Have you been distracted by someone wearing jewelry?

Would you remove jewelry if you ministered at someone elses church?

  1. I remember my grandmother about 37 years ago being very active in the church. This was in the day when women always wore hats, gloves and shoes that matched purses and all; about the late 60's and early 70's. She was what is known today as a psalmist. Everytime she had to stand before to minister, she took off hat, gloves, earrings and all. I asked why as a little kid and she simply said, "I don't want to be responsible for anyone not getting what they need from God because something on me is taking to much attention".
  2. I might have something to with their position or title in their organization. Certain types of jewerly like chains and crosses are worn for ecumenical reasons. That's the long and short of it..(smile)
  3. I think it depends on the size of the jewelry. If it is so big that it draws attention then a preacher shouldn't wear it in the pulpit. When ministering you don't want people missing the message because they were too busy checking out your bling.
  4. No, I dont think its gaudy. Its a tradition that most Bishops keep that came from the Roman Catholic Church. Its customary that a Bishop be signified by "large" rings that they wear on the ring finger on the right hand. It is usually a large ring because it had symbolisms that signify the call and character of the Bishop on there and is usually ... Read Moremade from the Gold that was sacrified from the people so that he or she takes the people with them wherever they go. My Pastor has 3 of these types of rings. One is silver and comes from the College of Bishops that is he a part of, one is really large with a stone in the middle and our organizations crest and his Bishopric symbols engraved in it that is usually worn while performing his priestly duties and the other one is an everyday wear type of rings. The latter two rings are gold and were made from the gold sacrifices from our churches and pastors that submit to him as their Bishop. Hope this helps.
