Is it appropriate to use the phrase "May the Lord watch, between me and thee, while we're absent, one from another, amen" during benediction?

  1. The same thing happened to me at church. I thought in the Baptist church we said it all the time. But since i've changed over to pentacostal after giving that benediction I got the same response.
  2. I grew up in a Pentecostal church and that prayer was used routinely to end Sunday School. As an adult I was called to give the benediction at a service (different church) and was totally caught off guard - that prayer from my childhood came to mind, so that's what I said. Afterwards, a minister (not the pastor) approached me and said we don't say that prayer here, I'm not sure why though. I never thought anything was wrong with it, so was intrigued with the question being posed. Am I missing something?
  3. I don't use it because the parties in scripture were pretty much saying you stay over there and I will stay over here and if either of us try to double back God sees what you are doing and may He handle you in my absence.
  4. Well let's just break it down and see what it means...Word for Word...Let us dialogue friends! Minister Joan
  5. It's a plea to God to keep you safe until you see each other again. In these days you may want to say it often.
  6. I was always confused when churches used that DEATH THREAT as a benediction, lol!!!
  7. Tradition is a great thing but if you do want a change of pace try Numbers 6:24-26...it's the Aaronic Benediction.
  8. That's right Lisa! Great find...I was trying to find that. Good look out!
  9. 43 And Laban answered and said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine: and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have born? 44 Now therefore come thou, let us ... Read Moremake a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee. 45 And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar. 46 And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap. 47 And Laban called it Jegarsahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed. 48 And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed; 49 And Mizpah; for he said, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.
  10. Lofton, good scripture to say instead. I like that.
